History

Coppell was settled by German and French immigrants in the 1840s and was originally known as Gibbs Station, after Barnett Gibbs, one of Texas’s early lieutenant governors. When the railroad came through, the town was renamed in 1892 for George Coppell, a New York banker and financier tied to the rail line, and the name of the train stop became the name of the town. For decades Coppell stayed a small farming village; it was formally incorporated in 1955 by a ballot that passed 41 to 1.

The opening of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in 1974 transformed Coppell, and through the 1980s and 1990s it grew into an affluent suburban community. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Coppell reached a population of 42,983 in 2020. It occupies the northwest corner of Dallas County, bordered by Grapevine, Lewisville, Carrollton, and Irving, with part of the DFW Airport property inside its city limits.
